On YouTube, we already share ad revenues with eligible news publishers – and they retain a significant share of earnings from the content they produce and upload. We are proud to support quality journalism by many local Creators who often focus, for example, on sharing views and news from more remote parts of Indonesia that traditional newsrooms don’t always cover.
We do not believe that the current draft regulation would deliver on the government’s objective to create a framework for a robust news industry and thriving creator ecosystem in Indonesia. With the right building blocks, we believe that there is more we can do to increase and support quality journalism, including – but not limited to – launching our content licensing program, News Showcase, in partnership with some of Indonesia’s most respected local, regional and national publications.
While we are disappointed with the current direction of the proposed regulation, we still hope to reach a workable solution, and we remain committed to engaging with all relevant stakeholders. We want to continue to explore approaches that support a balanced news ecosystem in Indonesia – one that delivers quality news for everyone and allows all news publishers, large and small, to thrive.
